IMF made itself available to help Brazil with fiscal anchor, says Haddad in Davos

The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, said this Tuesday (17th) that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has made itself available to help Brazil choose a “credible” and “sustainable” fiscal anchor.

“We had a meeting with the IMF, and it was interesting because they became aware of the Brazilian debate on the fiscal anchor and made the technical team available to Brazil, so that we can learn about all the rules in force today and their opinion,” said the minister to journalists in Davos, Switzerland.

Haddad declared that the IMF has shown concern about political sustainability in Brazil, and said that he wants to send Congress a fiscal rule that manages to balance this sustainability with fiscal responsibility.

“There is no point in having a fiscal rule that does not take into account what we call social responsibility, which is caring for people,” he added.

“In democracies, people who decide their destinies by voting, and to do so smoothly, they need to feel supported by public policies that provide a horizon of development for their families. So, uniting fiscal and social responsibility is fundamental even for the IMF”, concluded the minister.

Haddad, who participated this Tuesday in his first panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos, returns to the stage on Wednesday (18) to speak about the different leaderships in Latin America, in addition to economic policies and the global role of the region. The debate takes place at 11:15 am (Brasília time).
