The CEO of Todos Pela Educação, Priscila Cruz, in an interview with CNN Prime Time commented on Brazil’s progress in the Basic Education Development Index (Ideb) and emphasized the need to improve the implementation of educational policies in the country.
According to Cruz, it is essential to study educational policies to understand the factors that explain the success of some regions.
“We have to look at the evidence. That’s why it’s important to study educational policy, to extract from good examples the factors that explain its success,” he said.
The expert highlighted that Brazil already has a culture of observing what works in other regions.
As an example, he mentioned that the national literacy policy is strongly inspired by the Ceará model, and the expansion of comprehensive education was based on the experience of Pernambuco.
Implementation challenges
Cruz stressed that the main challenge is not in formulating policies, but rather in their effective implementation.
“What we need to do is improve the implementation of these policies a lot, because unfortunately in many networks we have difficulty in implementing them, making sure that the policy that has been decided, defined, so there was a decision made in relation to that specific policy, but transforming this formulation, this decision, into a practice that will result in better learning for students”, he explained.
The executive president of Todos Pela Educação emphasized that investment in teacher training is crucial to expanding the limits of educational results in Brazil.
“There is no way, there is no magic. What can really help us expand the limits of educational results in Brazil is the work of teachers,” he declared.
To achieve excellent performance by teachers in classrooms, Cruz argues that teacher training must be a priority at all levels of management.
“We need to improve initial training, which in Brazil has major gaps and difficulties, in-service teacher training, ongoing training, and ensure that these teachers are doing a good job in the classroom,” he concluded.
