In 2020, the Earth was spinning faster than before. The trend may intensify this year

In 2020, the Earth’s rotation speed increased – the 28 fastest days on record were recorded. Writes about this timeanddate.com.

The shortest day fell on July 19, when the day on the planet ended 1.4602 milliseconds faster than usual – this became a new record for the length of a day. The last fastest day was recorded in 1973.

In addition, scientists believe that 2021 will be even shorter. According to the researchers’ calculations, the average day this year will be 0.05ms faster, and throughout the year the atomic clock will be 19ms behind.

Livescience.com reports that there is nothing alarming about the changes in the length of the day. The rotation of the planet changes slightly all the time due to changes in atmospheric pressure, winds, ocean currents and the movement of the Earth’s core.

It is noted that if the rotation of the Earth is too much out of sync with the course of the atomic clock, then scientists can subtract a second from the time of year.
