Within the framework of the National Technology Initiative (NTI), unmanned truck races will be held in Russia in the coming years. Acceptance of applications for the technology competition “Unmanned Logistics Corridors” will open in 2022. The NTI Project Support Fund informs that in the same year it is planned to hold test races, and in 2023 – competitive ones, with a prize fund of 200 million rubles. The route M-11 (Moscow-St. Petersburg) was chosen for the event.

Trucks equipped with an unmanned control system will be able to participate in the competition. Their task is to complete the route from Moscow to St. Petersburg several times: at different times of the year, day and night, in any weather conditions, including the exit from the highway to the intermediate terminal in an unmanned mode to work out the task of unloading the cargo. The role of the cargo will be played by a standard container, which will demonstrate the possibility of commercial implementation of the developed technologies.

The organizers of the competitions note that the average speed of delivery of cargo over long distances in unmanned mode should be higher than usual, since there is no limitation formulated in clause 2.7. Traffic rules of the Russian Federation and concerning the violation by the driver of the regime of work and rest. Of course, all participants must comply with all traffic rules and get to the finish line without accidents or breakdowns.

Already in the fall of 2022, test drives will be held on the M-11 segments ready for unmanned vehicles. The entire track should be equipped for the movement of unmanned vehicles only by 2024, so that the races in 2023 will be held taking into account the degree of its readiness. Arrivals are planned to be held once a month until the first winner is determined or until the end of the year. To win, you need to make several successful races without traffic violations and stops, that is, to demonstrate a stable result.

It is expected that the competition will help in the creation of a unified communication protocol and data exchange of unmanned trucks with an information transport system, which is to be deployed on the M11 highway. In addition, the application of the regulatory framework for unmanned cargo transportation will be worked out.
