In Pernambuco, security cameras are placed in public school bathrooms

Surveillance cameras installed inside the bathrooms of the José de Lima Júnior High School Reference School (Erem), in Carpina, in the Zona da Mata of Pernambuco, have generated a wave of indignation among parents and students.

The equipment, which supposedly records images in restricted areas – such as bathrooms –, was denounced by students, who claim that the presence of the cameras violates the privacy and intimacy of those who use the spaces. The presence of devices in changing rooms is considered illegal, according to Brazilian legislation.

One student, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed her and other classmates’ concerns. “I feel harassed by the camera in the bathroom. We don’t even have privacy in the toilet. Recently they said it was off. But an employee told me that it is active and being monitored”, explained the student.

In images sent by students to CNN it is possible to see that the cameras are positioned inside the bathrooms, both male and female. This Thursday morning (24), students reported that the cameras had been removed from the school bathrooms.

Wanted by CNN the Pernambuco Department of Education and Sports reported that there are security cameras in the unit, but only installed in collective recreation and circulation environments. “The school respects privacy and values respect for students. There are no cameras in the bathrooms of the teaching unit”, points out the note.

In addition to the camera situation, students report structural problems at the school, such as insufficient space in the cafeteria. “Our school supports around 400 students, but the cafeteria only seats around 70. It is impossible for everyone to have a proper lunch,” said another student, who also requested anonymity. He reported that some students even eat their meals sitting on the floor.
