In Russia this year will create a department for artificial intelligence under the Ministry of Defense

Izvestia, with reference to a member of the board of the Military-Industrial Commission of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Osyko, reported that the Ministry of Defense plans to create a department for artificial intelligence. According to the official, work in this direction should be completed by December 1 of this year, therefore, starting next year, the ministry will “separately operate a customer on the subject of artificial intelligence.”

The intentions to create a special department for the development of artificial intelligence under the Ministry of Defense became known back in April, and at the end of last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a call to introduce new forms and methods of troop actions, as well as to learn from the experience of armed conflicts with an eye to the future.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said last month that AI combat robots are already being created in Russia, and these are “not just experimental samples”, but real combat vehicles. During the meeting of the working group, issues of equipping UAVs with artificial intelligence systems, as well as accelerating the development of unmanned civil aviation and the introduction of artificial intelligence technologies for military purposes were considered.
