In Thailand, food and magazines have been banned from airplanes

A new decision made in an attempt to minimize the spread of the coronavirus … In Thailand, authorities have ordered airlines to ban food, drinks, magazines and newspapers from their planes. However, leaflets that summarize the safety instructions are still permitted. As reported by the American channel CNN, only domestic flights are affected by this measure.

The Thai authorities had already taken a similar decision on April 26, by prohibiting the catering service on board aircraft flying inside the territory. This ban was eventually lifted on August 31, however. “The cleaning time after each stopover is extremely short (…) I think it is unlikely that operators will be able to properly clean all items on board, which would in fact lead to an increased risk of exposure to the virus, ”Chula Sukmanop, director-general of the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), told CNN to justify the decision to ban food and magazines on planes.

Authorized water distribution

Are passengers therefore forced to kill time by looking at the sky through the portholes? Not necessarily: they can bring their own magazines or newspapers on board, but are obliged to take them with them afterward. According to a CAAT press release, relayed by CNN, hostesses and stewards are authorized to distribute water if passengers request it, in particular, to take medication. The measure entered into force on December 31, when domestic air transport in Thailand is currently reduced by 60%.

The Kingdom of Thailand was the first country to spot a case of coronavirus infection outside of China at the start of 2020. However, it has so far been relatively untouched by the pandemic, with just over 7 100 cases and 63 deaths reported.
