Indescribable situation in India, in some areas the wood for the incineration was exhausted

The dam of 250,000 deaths from coronavirus India broke today, as another 4,205 deaths from COVID-19 were recorded in the last 24 hours, an unprecedented number since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country. The death toll thus reached 254,197 dead.

During the same period, almost 350,000 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed, bringing the total number of infected people to 23.3 million, while the number of selected active cases reached 3,704,099.

At a time when the situation seems to be improving in large urban centers, the pandemic is raging in small towns and rural communities at its ends. India, where two thirds of the population live and where the health system is even more unprepared to face the crisis, as explained by AMPE.

Many experts describe the official figures as underestimated in relation to reality.

“The death toll is much higher than our official figures show,” Anand Ban, an independent researcher on health policy and bioethics, told AFP, adding that even if one said it was “Triples to quadruples could underestimate them.”

Epidemiologists warn that it is too early to say with some degree of certainty that the curve of the pandemic has reached its peak.

“It is still too early to say that we have reached the peak,” Sahid Jamil, a leading Indian infectious disease specialist, told the Indian Express newspaper. “There are some indications that cases are flattened. But we must not forget that this is a very high level “: cases seem to be stabilizing” around 400,000 a day “.

In some parts of India the wood for traditional Hindu incineration has been exhausted of the dead. Corpses are washed by dozens on the banks of the Ganges. A resident of Gazipur district in the state of Uttar Pradesh estimated that some people throw corpses into the river “because of the lack of wood for incineration”.

Despite the scale of the crisis, the federal government of Prime Minister Narendra Monti wants to avoid imposing a national lockdown to avoid impacting the economy.
