Rescue crews and security forces continued to search for survivors at the site of the disaster, where a railway construction site in Manipur state was buried under huge amounts of mud and rocks.

But their efforts are hampered by the bad weather conditions, especially the rains. The situation “remains very serious,” state government chief N. Biren Singh said, releasing the latest casualty count.

Most of the bodies recovered belonged to reservists working at the construction site.

Northeast India, an isolated region, has been hit in recent weeks by heavy rains that have caused landslides and floods.

At the beginning of the year, at least ten people died due to natural disasters following unusually heavy rains in many areas.

Experts point out that climate change is increasing extreme weather events in the world, including India. In the giant Asian country, moreover, the construction of dams, deforestation and various development projects contribute to the disasters.
