The death toll from the collapse of a suspension bridge over the Machu River in the city of Morbi in the state of Gujarat has risen to 68, according to the latest authorities’ tally.
In the Turkish news agency Anadolu, the local minister of the regional government of the state, Bridges Meria, stated that 68 people died, stressing that the number of missing people cannot be determined at this time. “The rescue operation is still going on,” he said.
The historic bridge, 230 meters long, was built during the British colonial era, in the 19th century. It had been closed for maintenance for six months and reopened five days ago.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in his native Gujarat on a three-day visit, said he had instructed the state’s chief minister to immediately mobilize teams for the rescue operation.
