A Jakarta court on Wednesday sentenced an Indonesian jihadist to 15 years in prison on charges related to the deadliest bombings in the country’s history, which killed more than 200 people in Bali in 2002, local media reported.
Aris Sumarsono, better known as Zulkarnaen, is believed to have been the former commander of the Indonesian-based extremist Islamist group Jemaa Islamiya, according to the Jakarta Post. He was arrested at the end of 2020, after he managed to escape for almost two decades.
The president of the court stated that the 58-year-old was found “guilty of terrorism and sentenced to 15 years in prison”.
Sumarsono was accused of sponsoring another suspect and failing to inform authorities of the planned bombings. He denied the allegations. According to the Jakarta newspaper, he admitted that his organization carried out the attacks.
