Industrial production advances 0.6% in July, driven by the food sector, says IBGE

Industrial production increased 0.6% from June to July, after having registered a drop of 0.3% in the previous month, informed the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) this Friday (2).

The median of market expectations pointed to an increase of 0.5% in the period.

In comparison with July 2021, there was a drop of 0.5%, the second consecutive negative result by this comparison.

The IBGE revised the June data, which was down 0.4%.

With these results, the sector is still 0.8% below the pre-pandemic level (February 2020) and 17.3% below the record level reached in May 2011. In the year, the industry accumulates a fall of 2% and , in 12 months, of 3%.

The industrial sector has been showing a greater frequency of positive results throughout 2022, highlights the research manager, André Macedo, with five months of growth in seven opportunities.

“These results show the influence of government stimulus measures that help to explain the improvement recorded in the pace of production. But it is worth noting that even so, industrial production has not recovered the losses of the past,” he says.

Biggest positive influence came from food

The biggest positive influence for the result of the month compared to the previous month came from the sector of food products which increased 4.3%, highlights the institute.

This industrial activity registered the third consecutive month of increase in production, accumulating a high of 7.3% in the period. “This growth was widespread among the main items of this activity. From sugar, which has a significant increase for this couple of months, to beef, pork and poultry, in addition to dairy products and soy derivatives”, says Macedo.

Other positive contributions came from the coke, petroleum products and biofuels industries (2%), which returned to growth after falling 1.3% in the previous month, and mining and quarrying industries (2.1%), with an accumulated increase of 5% in two consecutive months of highs.

Despite these positive results, there is a predominance of activities in the negative field in the month, says the institute: ten industrial sectors showed growth and 16 showed a decrease. “It is a growth that takes place in a very concentrated way in this month of July”, says the researcher.

Among the negative highlights are machinery and equipment, which fell by 10.4% in the month, intensifying the 3.8% drop in the previous month, other chemical products (-9.0%) and automotive vehicles, trailers and bodies (-5.7%).

This second item had the third consecutive month of decline in production, accumulating a loss of 17.3% in the period. The latter eliminated part of the 10.0% growth accumulated in the months of May and June 2022.

“The machinery and equipment activity was directly affected by the items that remain within the industry, both serial production and made-to-order, and which are associated with investments within the industrial sector and the modernization and expansion of the production park,” highlights Macedo.
