Industry confidence in Brazil drops in September with lower demand, says FGV

The confidence of the industry in Brazil retreated in September in the face of the perception of reduction in demand and pessimism about future production, informed the Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) this Wednesday (28).

FGV data showed that the Industry Confidence Index (ICI) dropped 0.8 point compared to the previous month, to 99.5 points, after advancing by the same margin in August.

“In September, the confidence of the industry retreated influenced by a perception of the entrepreneurs of a fall in the demand for industrial products of all categories of use, except in the consumer products of non-durable goods”, explained the economist of FGV IBRE Stéfano Pacini, in note.

The Current Situation Index (ISA), which measures the feeling of entrepreneurs about the present moment of the industrial sector, dropped 1.9 points, to 100.9 points, according to FGV, mainly influenced by the perception of entrepreneurs in relation to the current situation. of business.

“The result negatively affects the assessment of the current business situation, despite a decompression in costs with the reduction of oil and energy prices”, completed Pacini, warning of the pessimism about the increase in production for the coming months.

According to him, this would be related to the slowdown in economic activity and difficulties in supplying some inputs.

The Expectations Index (IE), an indicator of the perception of the coming months, remained relatively stable, changing positively by 0.1 point, to 98.0 points.

“The scenario improves a little in the six-month horizon, but caution is needed considering that the more restrictive monetary policy should contain investments in the coming months,” he said.

Brazil’s industrial production rose again in July, up 0.6%, according to the most recent data from the IBGE, favored by government measures.

However, it started the third quarter with slow steps amid a scenario of high interest rates, high inflation and supply restrictions.
