Inflation became the top concern of people around the world in 2022.
The finding is part of an Ipsos survey, explained by economist and FGV professor Robson Gonçalves to CNN Radio .
“Inflation is one of the most easily perceived economic phenomena by the general population. You may not have any knowledge of economics, but you make a purchase at the market and get scared when you go to the cashier”, said Gonçalves.
The economist points out that several sectors of the economy would be closer to normal if they were not influenced by the rise in commodities affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “It’s an inflationary wave on a world scale and it’s the biggest in the last 40 years.”
Gonçalves declared himself optimistic about a drop in inflation, but stressed that the effects should only be felt from next year.
The FGV professor explained that the decrease in purchasing power should break the cycle of high prices at some point.
Another factor that should help control inflation throughout 2022 is the normalization of supply chains, still affected by the pandemic, especially the strict lockdown in regions of China.
