Last summer, information appeared that Intel was exploring the possibility of building a factory worth 20 billion euros in Europe. The company already has factories in Ireland, but now it looks like Magdeburg, Germany, will be Intel’s second production site, at least according to German MDR. It claims that a corresponding official announcement will be made next week.
Magdeburg was not the only option. According to the source, Intel also considered Dresden, where the Fraunhofer Institute of Organic Electronics, Electron Beam and Plasma Technologies and other similar structures were located. Dresden also has twice the population of Magdeburg, which means it would be easier to find suitable specialists. This makes Intel’s choice a bit odd, as Magdeburg doesn’t seem to have any particularly outstanding features that would make it the best choice for a semiconductor factory. It’s possible Intel chose this location based on the local supply chain, but that’s just speculation at this point.
