Interest in Wolrdcoin in Argentina breaks records

In Argentina, the number of registrations in the cryptocurrency project of ChatGPT creator Sam Altman – Worldcoin – has grown to a new record and amounted to 9.5 thousand in one day, despite the ongoing investigation in the country regarding the safety of using data by the project, writes RBC Crypto.

Argentina’s Public Information Agency launched an investigation into the security of the Worldcoin project in August. The investigation will carefully analyze the processes and practices of collecting, storing and using users’ personal data.

The company has placed scanning devices in four cities in Argentina – Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata, Cordoba and Mendoza. High demand also caused World App, a wallet created for the Worldcoin project, to temporarily become the most popular app on the App Store in Argentina, the company said.

At the end of July, the French regulator questioned the legality of the collection of biometrics by the Worldcoin cryptocurrency project. The project collected data in the country, because of this, the local Data Privacy Authority initiated an investigation.

Also, the German regulator launched an investigation into the activities of Worldcoin regarding the collection of biometrics in 2022. BayLDA officials fear that the company is processing “sensitive data on a very large scale” with the help of new technologies.

Worldcoin scans people’s eyeballs using the Orb device, a reflective metal ball that records information about a person’s iris in the form of a cryptographic code. All who pass the scan will participate in periodic distributions of WLD tokens, the creators of the project are positioning this as a form of universal basic income.
