IPCA-15: airline tickets in Brazil rose 123% in the last 12 months

At airline tickets in Brazil rose by 123% between June 2021 and June 2022, according to data released on Friday (24) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), through the Extended National Consumer Price Index-15 (IPCA-15). Among the 11 capitals analyzed, Salvador had the highest increase (159.5%) while Belém had the lowest, 49.93%.

In the monthly variation, the price of air tickets grew 11.36% in the June preview and was the sub-item within transport with the main increase between May and June this year. In 2022, the value of air tickets rose 3.6%.

According to estimates by the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC), given the increase in demand for flights and the high cost of aviation kerosene, the price of air tickets in Brazil should continue to increase in the coming months, with a forecast of increase between 5% and 10% in the amount paid by the consumer.

One of the two factors that directly affect the final price of tickets, aviation kerosene (QAV) has already accumulated a growth of 102.4% from June last year to June this year, according to the Brazilian Association of Airlines (ABEAR), based on data from the National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP).

In addition to the QAV, the demand for flights also impacts the value of tickets, as explained by Fábio Bentes, economist at CNC. He estimates that the cost of tickets will be even higher at the end of the year, when demand tends to be higher during the holidays and festivities.

“That fuel, food and energy inflation is reaching the service sector – and airfare is a service. The trend in view of the typical seasonality of this type of service is that there will be pressure in the last quarter of 2022. As we are facing a window of opportunity, prices should not rise so much in the short term, but at the end of the year “, projected the economist .

The president of the Brazilian Federation of Accommodation and Food (FBHA), Alexandre Sampaio, expressed concern about the tourism sector, which, according to CNC, had a loss of R$ 485.1 billion between March 2020 and January 2022, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It is necessary for governments to look at our sector and for oil prices to stabilize so that not only tourism recovers, but jobs are boosted, traders come out of the red and Brazilians can once again enjoy the happiness of traveling and enjoy the beauties of our country”, he said, in a statement issued by the entity.
