Iran: Bloodshed continues in protests over the death of 22-year-old Mahsha Amini

There is no end the violence in the protests that have been taking place in Iran for more than a week over the death of Mahsha Aminiwhile in the custody of the moral police, with state media reporting at least 35 dead.

The 22-year-old arrested on September 13 in Tehran for “improper clothing” by the moral policewhich is tasked with monitoring compliance with the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code.

Amini she died three days later in hospital and her death sparked protests in Iran’s main citiesincluding the capital Tehran.

“State television announced on Friday night that the number of people who have died in the recent unrest in the country has reached 35,” Borna News, the agency linked to Iran’s Sports Ministry, reported.

On Thursday, state television announced the death of 17 people in these protests. Iranian authorities deny any involvement in the violent incidents.

In the Islamic Republic, women must cover their hair and are not allowed to wear short or tight coats and ripped jeans.

Yesterday, Friday evening, Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi again stated that Makhsa Amini was not beaten by the forces of order.

“Surveillance reports have been taken, witnesses have been interviewed, video footage has been examined, forensic reports have been obtained and it has been determined that the young woman was not beaten.”Vahidi, quoted by local media, said on television.

According to the interior minister, the Iranian government is conducting an investigation “into the causes of Mahsha Amini’s death, (but) we will have to wait for the final forensic report, which takes time.”

Vahidi also criticized “those who took irresponsible positions, (…) and incited violence”, accusing them of “following the US, European countries and counter-revolutionary groups”.
