Iran: Boxer involved in protests sentenced to death

A boxer was sentenced to death in Iran about his role in the 2019 demonstrations, announced on Monday (17/01) non-governmental human rights organizations, fifteen months after the execution of a wrestler, who had caused an international outcry.

Mohammad Javad Wafaei-Sani, 26, was sentenced to life in prison for arson and destruction of government buildings, according to the Norwegian-based NGO Iran Human Rights.

He was detained in February 2020, in particular for his participation in the mobilizations of November 2019, which were triggered by the sudden increase in fuel prices, the organization clarified.

Babak Paknia’s lawyer confirmed the verdict in a tweet and announced his intention to appeal the decision before the Supreme Court.

Iran Human Rights, according to the Athens News Agency, described Vafaei-Sani as a “champion»Boxing in the city of Mashhad, in eastern Iran, where he is currently being held.

The sentence of the 26-year-old is reminiscent of that of wrestler Navid Afkari,

A hashtag has been released on Twitter, #SaveMohammadJavad, in which users call on the authorities to save his life.

The National Council of the Iranian Resistance, the political wing of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of the Iranian People (both of which are banned in Iran), said Wafai-Sani, a champion of the boxing, is accused of supporting the Mujahideen of the Iranian people.

THE The 26-year-old’s conviction is reminiscent of that of wrestler Navid Afkari, The 27-year-old was hanged in September 2020, despite international outcry and a call to exclude Iran from sporting events.

Afkari was executed for murder during a demonstration two years ago. He had confessed after being tortured, as alleged.
