Hundreds of Iranians demonstrated on Tuesday and Wednesday in the western part of the country to protest the lack of drinking water and the failure of officials to solve the problem, Iranian state media reported today.
In recent months, thousands of people have demonstrated against water shortages, mainly in central and southwestern Iran, an arid country that has faced particularly severe drought in recent years.
“Hundreds of people” gathered yesterday, Wednesday night, in Hamadan, which is 300 kilometers west of Tehran, the official Irna news agency reported.
“For the second night in a row,” they demonstrated “in front of the governor’s office and around the tomb of Avicenna (Persian philosopher and physician) to denounce the interruption of the city’s water supply network,” Irna added.
The website of the Hamsahri newspaper, a newspaper of the Tehran municipality, today broadcast a short video of a night protest rally, where dozens of people, mostly women, call on their “fellow citizens” to “show their courage” and join the demonstrations.
According to the same source, some districts of Hamadan “have been facing water cuts for eight days” and the protesters are now calling for the resignation of “incompetent officials” and the governor.
The protesters were “holding empty water bottles in their hands”, shouting “slogans against the officials” and “demanding urgent action to provide drinking water to the city”, Irna reported at the same time.
In mid-July, authorities in northwestern Iran arrested protesters who were protesting the lowering of water levels in one of the world’s largest salt lakes, Lake Urmia, according to the news agency.
Iran has been affected in recent years by drought and floods due to torrential rains.
At the end of July, authorities announced that 96 people had died, including dozens near Tehran, in more than a week of flooding in several parts of the country.
