Iran, girls poisoned to prevent them from going to school

For some months, at least since the end of November, the local media have reported cases of poisoned girls in the city of Qom, holy city for Iranian Shiites. The cases are of respiratory poisoning and the victims are hundreds of girls of about 10 years. It turned out that this is not accidental.

According to the agency Irna, on February 14, the parents of the pupils asked for explanations by meeting in front of the governorate of the city. Only now has Deputy Health Minister Youness Panahi revealed the intentionality of the poisoningsbecause “it emerged that some individuals wanted all schools, especially girls’ schools, to be closed”.

The poisoning was allegedly caused by “chemical compounds available not for military use, and is neither contagious nor transmissible”. It was used to prevent the girls from being unable to go to school. Schools and universities are the places where dissent is born in Iran and close them, as the Taliban did in Afghanistanis a method of repression.

The intelligence and education ministries said they were working together to find the source of the poisoning. According to the agency France Presse, no arrests were announced. In addition to Qom, there were also incidents in the city of Borujerd, in the center of the country where more than 90 high school students went to hospital with symptoms of poisoning.
