Iran: Revolutionary Guards call for arrest of ‘Maradona of Asia’ for supporting protesters

Ali Karimi, also known as the “Maradona of Asia”, is targeted by the “Revolutionary Guards” because he supports the protests in Iran for the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini.

The pro-government Fars news agency, which talks about the Revolutionary Guards, called Karimi a “riot” and called Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Justice to “deal with”. This suggests the government is increasingly concerned about his role in the protests.

The 43-year-old veteran footballer is using the internet to call people to take to the streets, while on social media he shows videos and photos of the protests that have broken out. In fact, in one of his posts he called on the soldiers not to get involved in suppressing the demonstrations.

“You are a soldier for your country and you are here to protect the lives of your citizens – not to take them away”He wrote.

In another post, he noted the following: “I am an ordinary citizen of Iran and I am not looking for a place for my activities. I seek only the peace and prosperity of my people.”

Alongside, urges his followers to use virtual private networks, or VPNs, to avoid Internet outages and share videos safely.
