Iran says it is ready for a prisoner exchange with the United States and calls on US President Joe Biden to “take action instead of making plays.”
“We are ready to exchange prisoners with Washington… The United States must release imprisoned Iranian citizens unconditionally,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani was quoted as saying by the Fars news agency.
Tehran is seeking the release of thirteen Iranians from the United States, including seven Iranian-Americans with dual citizenship, two Iranian permanent residents of the United States and four Iranian citizens without permission to remain in the United States.
Yesterday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken tweeted that Shiamak Namazi has completed 2,500 days of wrongful detention in Iran and that Washington is determined to secure the freedom of all Americans held in the country.
Kanaani’s statement coincides with the culmination of efforts to save the international agreement to control Tehran’s nuclear program. The European Union and the United States are studying Iran’s response to the EU’s “final” proposal to save the deal, after Tehran called on Washington to show flexibility.
