According to some media, the Iranian climber Elnaz Rekabi could end up in jail for having appeared to compete without wearing the hijab in the Asian Climbing Championship that was held in South Korea.
One of the situations that caused tension was the fact that his whereabouts were unknown once the images were broadcast and went around the world, so the worst was thought. However, the athlete was present on her social networks, where she confirmed her return to Iran, but she also added the possibility of facing a prison sentence for having appeared to compete without her on hijab.
I want to apologize for the concerns I have caused. It was all due to something involuntary, because they called me to compete very quickly and I couldn’t put it on (the veil). I am returning with the team to Iran according to the schedule we agreed on.
According to his testimony, the organizers advanced the programming and that is why he did not have the hijab. Now that her whereabouts are known, the great unknown is what will happen to her when she sets foot in Tehran, because, as we know, according to the laws of Iran, all women are obliged to wear the veil and, of course, that includes athletes within their different competitions at the international level.

When Elnaz appeared in the competition, many women took it as a sign of protest against the situation in that country after the death of the 22-year-old, Mahsa Amini, who after being arrested for not wearing the hijabdied without the cause being clear and convincing to society.
In the wake of Mahsa’s death, international demonstrations broke out, with many women cutting their hair as a sign of support, while others removed their hair. hijab by taking to the streets to fight for their rights and justice. For this reason, it was believed in the first instance that the climber had joined the protest.
However, with his clarification, he suggests that it was not due to that, but to the forgetfulness he had. In addition, he failed to clarify what was going to happen to her because of that carelessness. For her part, the International Olympic Committee says it has received “clear guarantees” that the athlete “will not suffer any consequences and she will continue training and competing.”
A spokesman for this organization reported that these guarantees were received at a joint meeting between the IOC, the International Climbing Federation and the Iranian Olympic Committee. Elnaz subsequently joined a telephone conversation with the three entities.
In addition to this, the spokesman reported that the girl is already in Iran safe and sound next to her family, but the IOC will continue to closely monitor the situation. It is understood that upon her arrival, she was greeted with cheers and displays of affection from the Iranians who showed her support.
