Iraqi soldiers killed in suspected Islamic State attack

A commander and four Iraqi soldiers were killed on Monday (13) in an alleged Islamic State attack on a military post in eastern Iraq, two security forces sources said.

Another five soldiers were injured. The attack took place between the provinces of Diyala and Salahuddin, a rural area that is home to armed group activity.

These terrorist cells remain active years after Iraq declared victory over jihadist groups in 2017.

The Iraqi Ministry of Defense issued a statement mourning the death of Colonel Khaled Nagi Wassak “along with several heroic fighters from the regiment as a result of their response to a terrorist attack.”

Security forces repelled the attack, but there were many casualties during the attack, the statement added.

Iraq has enjoyed relative security stability in recent years following the chaos of the 2003 US-led invasion and the years of bloody conflict that followed.

Baghdad is now seeking to oust the U.S.-led international coalition that helped defeat Islamic State and remains in the country as an adviser, saying local security forces can deal with the threat alone.
