Israel-Hamas war: US vetoes Security Council draft resolution for immediate ceasefire

The USA they showed it today veto them in a draft resolution of Security Council of the United Nations Organization that merited the implementation of one “immediate” ceasefire at Gauzein the third in line veto which they have been practicing since its inception war between their Israeli ally and Hamas.

The draft of the text, compiled by Algeria and which required “a immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons, which must be respected by all sides”, received 13 votes in favour, one against and one abstention (UK).

“A vote in favor of this draft resolution is support for the Palestinian right to life. Instead, to vote against implies approval of violence and collective punishment imposed against them,” Algeria's ambassador to the United Nations, Amar Benjama, told the Council before the vote.

THE US ambassador at the UN Linda Thomas Greenfield indicated on Saturday that the US would veto the draft resolution because of concerns that could put in danger them conversations between the US, Egypt, Israel and Qatar, which aims to achieve acessation of hostilities and the release of hostages held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

“Any action this council takes at this time should help, not hinder, these sensitive and ongoing negotiations. And we believe that the draft resolution that is on the table now will, in fact, have a negative impact on those negotiations,” Thomas Greenfield argued before the council ahead of the vote.

“Calling for an immediate, unconditional ceasefire without an agreement requiring Hamas to release the hostages will not lead to a lasting peace. Instead, will prolong the war between Hamas and Israel“, he emphasized.

Since then, as APE-MPE reports, the US has tabled another draft resolution in favor of implementing a temporary ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war and against a major ground operation by Israel's ally in Rafah, according to the text obtained owned by Reuters news agency.

The draft resolution drafted by Algeria and vetoed by the US did not link a ceasefire to the release of hostages. It separately called for the implementation of an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
