The Israeli army eliminated Suhail Hussein Husseini, commander of Hezbollah’s headquarters, in an attack in the Beirut area, according to a statement on Tuesday (8).
Husseini played a “crucial role in arms transfers between Iran and Hezbollah and was responsible for distributing advanced weaponry among Hezbollah units,” the statement said.
He was also a member of the Jihad council, Hezbollah’s senior military leadership council, the Israeli statement added.
If confirmed, Husseini’s death would be the result of Israel’s strategy of inflicting major blows by assassinating leaders and commanders of Hezbollah and its ally Hamas, which has been fighting Israel in the Gaza Strip for a year.
In the biggest blow to Hezbollah in decades, Israel killed its leader Hassan Nasrallah with an airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburbs late last month.
New operation in Lebanon
The Israeli army announced on Tuesday that its 146th Division had begun what it called “limited operations”, localized and directed against Hezbollah targets and infrastructure in southwest Lebanon.
