Israel said it will return to the AP news agency the transmission equipment it confiscated in Sderot this Tuesday (21). A camera showed live images from the border with the Gaza Strip.
In a statement, Israeli Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi said he ordered the cancellation of the operation and the return of the equipment to the AP news agency.
According to Karhi, “the Israeli Ministry of Defense wishes to examine the issue of transmissions from these locations in Sderot in relation to the risk to our forces.”
Earlier, the minister accused the AP of violating a new law by providing camera footage to its thousands of clients, including Qatar's Al Jazeera news network.
USA requested return
The Israeli government's decision to return the transmission equipment came after the White House expressed concerns to the Netanyahu administration, a White House official told CNN.
“As soon as we learned of the reports, the White House and the State Department immediately engaged with the Israeli government to express our serious concerns and ask them to back down, which they have publicly committed to do,” the Council spokeswoman said. of White House Security, Adrienne Watson, at CNN.
“The free press is an essential pillar of democracy and members of the media, including the AP, carry out vital work that must be respected,” he added.
The Associated Press approved the Israeli Communications Ministry's decision to return its equipment, but warned that it remains concerned about the law that led to the problem.
