Trevisan stressed that the attack occurred at a delicate time, shortly after President Joe Biden announced progress in ceasefire negotiations. “It is clear that this cannot be an attack without a very strong motive,” the professor said, highlighting the presence of a senior Hamas leader at the site.
Interference in the American elections
The expert warned of the possible interference of this episode in the US presidential elections. “The scenario of the American election has international components. One of them is Netanyahu, the other is Putin. It is indisputable that these two international actors are not, let’s put it this way, very friendly with Joe Biden,” Trevisan explained.
According to the professor, the ideological proximity between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former President Donald Trump is “notorious.” Trevisan argued that this relationship could influence the course of events in the Middle East and, consequently, the perception of American voters.
Impact on peace negotiations
The attack could also jeopardize ongoing diplomatic efforts. “Every time the ceasefire becomes a little more consistent, a little more defined, an attack of this kind ruins everything,” Trevisan noted.
The professor highlighted the existence of ‘two Israels’: a traditional and democratic one, currently ‘silenced’, and a more bellicose one, opposed to a two-state solution. This duality, according to him, complicates American diplomatic efforts in the region.
Leonardo Trevisan concluded by warning that the attack on Gaza, especially considering its location in an area previously considered protected, is “very worrying”. He stressed that, regardless of the military reasons, the human losses are “brutal” and the episode will certainly have repercussions on the international political scene, particularly in the US elections.
