Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, travels this Sunday (23) to the United States to discuss the current situation of the war in Gaza, highlighting that the conflict is in the transition phase to a third stage.
“The United States is our greatest ally. Our calls are important and probably more important now than ever before,” Gallant emphasized in a video recorded before his departure from Tarmac Airport.
“In these meetings, I will discuss advances on the Gaza front and the Lebanese front, which are crucial at this time. We are prepared to take any necessary action in Gaza, Lebanon and elsewhere.”
The visit comes amid escalating tensions on the border between Israel and Lebanon, where hostilities with Hezbollah have raised fears of a wider conflict.
In April, the Iran-backed group launched its deepest attack on Israel since the start of the conflict. Back in June, Hezbollah fired rockets at its neighbor in retaliation for an Israeli attack that killed a senior Hezbollah field commander.
Hezbollah has said it will not stop attacks until there is a ceasefire in Gaza. On Tuesday (18), Israel warned Hezbollah of the possibility of a “total war” if the escalation continued.
Gallant is expected to meet with his US counterpart, Lloyd Austin, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken during the trip.
“The transition to ‘phase C’ in the Gaza Strip is of paramount importance. I will discuss this transition with US authorities on how it will allow for additional factors [ao conflito]and I know that we will close closer cooperation between Israel and the USA on this matter”, pointed out the Israeli Defense Minister.
