Israeli soldiers serving in Gaza to be vaccinated against polio

The Israeli military announced today that it will begin offering the polio vaccine to soldiers serving in the Gaza Strip after traces of the contagious polio virus were found in samples taken from areas of the coastal enclave. The army also said that with the cooperation of international organizations, enough vaccines have arrived to cover at least 2.3 million residents of Gaza. Soldiers will be vaccinated during the regular rotation of soldiers, although vaccination will not be mandatory, the military said. Most of Gaza’s health infrastructure was destroyed during Israel’s military offensive that began more than nine months ago after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7. Public health officials and aid organizations have warned that without proper health services the population is particularly vulnerable to disease outbreaks. Source: RES
