Russian gas giant Gazprom said today it could not guarantee the smooth operation of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline serving Europe, saying it could not confirm it would recover a German turbine that had been sent to Canada for repairs.
“Gazprom does not have any documents in its possession allowing Siemens to remove from Canada the gas turbine engine” that Ottawa says it wants to return to Berlin, Gazprom said in a statement. “Under these circumstances, it is not possible to draw an objective conclusion regarding the development of the situation regarding the full safe operation” of the pipeline, the group adds.
Germany’s finance ministry declined to comment on Gazprom’s announcement that it does not have documents showing that Siemens received permission to bring a gas turbine for the Nord Stream 1 pipeline from Canada.
“We do not comment on statements made by Gazprom,” a spokesman for the ministry said, adding that Siemens said it was in the planning stage so that the transfer and development could take place as quickly as possible.
