“It was a planned act”, says governor of Espírito Santo about attack on schools

The governor of Espírito Santo, Renato Casagrande, spoke to the CNN about the shooting attack on two schools in Aracruz (ES), this Friday (25), which killed three people and left at least 11 injured. According to the governor, the attack was premeditated by a former student.

The killer is 16 years old and had already studied at one of the institutions affected, the Primo Bitti State Elementary and Middle School (EEFM). According to the state Secretariat of Public Security, he was wearing camouflage clothes and his face was covered at the time of the crime.

“This was a planned act. Our school had security, he broke the lock, we have video cameras, the scenes were recorded; it was a planned action by someone who has a mental problem, but that mental problem took the lives of three people and shot 10 more people,” said Casagrande.

The governor stated that it is necessary to strengthen the debate around mental health and also access to weapons.

“The debate on mental health is fundamental, the debate on access to weapons is fundamental in an area like this. Because he naturally had [fácil acesso]the family is police officers, his father has a gun, so he had easy access to the gun and anyway he knows how to handle the gun well, because he shot several times, with a certain intimacy”, he said.

According to the state Department of Public Security, the gunman managed to enter the first school, EEFM Primo Bitti, after breaking the lock on the gate. He opened fire in the staff room, leaving two teachers dead and nine injured.

The shooter proceeded to the second school by car, where he killed a 12-year-old child, and left two people injured, with no information on their ages.

THE CNN Renato Casagrande explained that the shooter entered through the back gate of the school, after breaking a padlock, and the first place he had first access was the teachers’ room, where the professionals were gathered, since it was the recess period of the students.

“We have already set up an emotional support group, we are going to strengthen this work this weekend. The Secretary of Education will discuss with our team what will happen at this school next week, we need emotional support work”, said Casagrande.
