Italy: 15,085 new coronavirus cases and 103 deaths

In the last twenty-four hours in Italy 15,085 cases of coronavirus were recorded and 103 people lost their lives. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 5,043,620 infections in the country, with 133,931 deaths.

A total of 573,775 diagnostic tests for coronavirus were performed today, 2.6% of which were positive. There are 686 patients in the Italian intensive care unit, and 5,248 in the hospital wards.

Meanwhile, one of the “leaders” of the Italian anti-vaccination movement, the far-right Lorenzo Damiano, 56, after being admitted to an ICU in northern Italy, changed his mind and asked to be vaccinated. In fact, in an appeal to all his compatriots, he stressed that “his worldview has now changed” and called on everyone to be vaccinated as soon as possible. In the last week, the number of vaccinated patients in the intensive care unit increased by 17%, while the number of vaccinated patients decreased by 10%.

A while ago, another Italian tested positive for the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. This is a passenger who was on an air flight that arrived in Sardinia from Rome. He had recently returned to Europe from Africa. This is, however, an asymptomatic patient. He was isolated, along with all 130 of his passengers, until the necessary tests were performed. So far, in Italy the cases of the Omicron variant are ten.

The Committee of Experts of the Italian Medicines Agency is finally expected to approve, within the next few hours, the administration of a reduced dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to children aged 5 to 11 years. In total, in Italy it is 4,000,000.
