Italy: 367 migrants were transferred to Sicily after days of waiting

The 367 migrants waiting to be transferred to Sicily, while staying at sea for a day, went to the Italian city, after the intervention of the aid organization Doctors Without Borders.

The ship Geo Barents, which conducts search and rescue operations in Mediterranean, moored in the port at Palermo late last night Wednesday (27/10). The migrants on board – according to NGO rescuers, including 172 children – were tested for the new coronavirus before being taken to reception, identification and quarantine centers.

THE Mayor of Palermo, Leoluca Orlando, went to the port to receive the immigrants, broadcast the Italian public news agency ANSA.

During a mission lasting several weeks, the Geo Barents rescued these migrants from inflatable and wooden boats in distress. The crew has been waiting for approval since last weekend to transport them to a safe port.

The aid organization was worried as meteorologists forecast storms in the area southeast of Of Sicily and south of it Calabria. The ship finally received a green light from the Italian authorities to moor in the port of the city. “There are no words to express the joy and relief on the boat,” she said MSF.

Thousands of migrants and refugees are trying to reach the shores of a country The European Union, departing with often dangerous vessels from its shores Î’mountainous Africa, especially from Libya. Many manage to reach Italy. Others are rescued by NGO ships. If stopped by the Libyan Coast Guard, they are driven back.
