Tensions between police and airline employees Alitalia that closed the highway that connects the capital with Fiumicino Airport occurred today (24/9) at noon.
Part of about five hundred protesters inside the airport, tried to block traffic on the motorway that connects the Italian capital with Fiumicino-Leonardo da Vinci airport.
The police intervened by carrying some protesters to the roadside and the intensity increased noticeably. The mobilization was organized to question the intention of the new Italian airline Ita (which will succeed Alitalia from October 15) to hire only part of the “old” employees, to proceed with salary cuts of up to 50% and to demand the implementation corporate agreements.
In the whole affair, a strike was declared in Italy today throughout the aviation sector and 60% of Alitalia flights were canceled. The Rome-Fiumicino motorway was closed for about three hours. At this stage, the negotiations of the Italian unions with the new airline Ita have been suspended.
