Italy: Center-Left, Left and Five Stars Do Not Nominate Presidential Candidate – Want Draghi, ‘No’ to Berlusconi

Center-left Democratic Party Secretary Enrico Letta, Five Star Movement leader Giuseppe Conte and Health Minister Roberto Speranza, of the left-wing Free and Equal Party, met in Rome today to decide on a new front. Italy.

For now, they have decided not to formally propose a specific name, although it is clear they would like to elect incumbent Prime Minister Mario Draghi. According to analysts, they do not openly mention his name before the start of the election process, next Monday, so as not to “burn” him.

In a joint Twitter message, the three politicians stressed that “they will work together to offer Italy one or more presidents to represent all citizens”, adding that “they are open to dialogue, but no one has any priority”. “We all owe the debt of responsibility,” concluded Enrico Letta, Giuseppe Conte and Roberto Speranza.

This is essentially a message addressed to Silvio Berlusconi, who was the first – and at the moment the only one – who clearly showed that he wants to be the successor of President Sergio Matarella. His whole effort, of course, in the last few hours seems to encounter more and more obstacles.

The only one who made a clear reference to Cavaliere in a statement after today’s meeting was the leader of the “five stars” and former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte: “We are ready to have a broad dialogue. Of course, candidacies should be withdrawn from the table. “They do not enjoy common acceptance, like that of Berlusconi,” he said.
