With their detailed letter, eleven major mayors Italian cities, they asked him Mario Draghi to remain in the prime ministership. The letter is signed by, among others, the mayor of Venice Luigi Brugnaro, the mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri, and those of Milan and Florence, Bepe Sala and Dario Nardella.
The appeal emphasizes that “at this stage Italy needs stability” and that Mario Draghi should remain in his position “because he has proven that he has dignity and prestige, at a political and institutional level.”
In the meantime, the decision of the Five Star Movement is awaited on whether it will finally withdraw its ministers from the government, or whether a rapprochement with the Italian technocrat prime minister will be attempted. The final position of the movement, after a series of meetings and internal negotiations, can be announced tonight or tomorrow, by noon.
The center-left Democratic Party, on the other hand, continues to ask Mario Draghi to continue this prime ministerial experience, and to present himself, on Wednesday, to the senate, giving weight to the next, key goals of the government.
As far as the center-right faction is concerned, Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia and Matteo Salvini’s League are in favor of a second Draghi government, but without the participation of the “five stars”, who they consider insolvent.
Most political analysts, however, underline that until this moment, “Super Mario” has not changed his mind and that he intends to confirm his decision to resign. A move which would, in all probability, lead to the announcement of early parliamentary elections.
