According to research by the elder Italian union, Cgil, 9.2 million citizens face substantial economic difficulties, either because they are unemployedor because their work does not guarantee them a satisfactory income.
The research institute Giuseppe Di Vittorio, which belongs to the trade union Cgil, proceeded to record the unemployed and those who have been discouraged and have stopped looking for work. At this stage it is about 4.3 million citizens.
At the same time, another 4.9 million citizens work only for short periods of time or were forced to accept employment for a certain period of time, with benefits that do not cover their needs. The difficulties, according to the trade union Cgil and the Di Vittorio foundation, are more intense for young people up to twenty-four years of age and women.
The lack of work and unsatisfactory conditions are directly related to the different age groups: in Italy 61.7% of young people up to 24 years old are unemployed, have stopped looking for work or are not satisfied with their earnings and the duration of their work , while the corresponding percentage drops to 13.9% for citizens aged 55 to 64.
