James Cameron is the first director to have three movies gross $2 billion at the box office

Director James Cameron has made history once again.

On Sunday (22), his new film “Avatar: The Way to Water” surpassed US$ 2 billion at the box office, becoming the 6th highest grossing film in the history of cinema.

The title is still playing in theaters, so the value may increase.

The feature is the sequel to the highest-grossing of all time, released in 2009, and, according to Cameron, it needed to reach that mark to cover production costs.

Furthermore, he said that the future of the franchise depended on the success of the 2nd film. That said, new conflicts in the Pandora universe are to be expected.

This is the 3rd time that Cameron has reached such a milestone – which is not as common as he makes it out to be.

Only six films have earned more than US$ 2 billion in revenue, three from the Canadian director. They are: “Titanic”, in 3rd place, “Avatar” (2009), in 1st place, and “Avatar: The Way of Water” in 6th.

Recently, 20th Century Studios announced that the long Jack and Rose will return to theaters in February this year, in celebration of the production’s 25th anniversary.

With that, just like your last release, “Titanic” can further increase your income.

That’s what happened to “Avatar” who had lost leadership to “Avengers: Endgame” but with the return to the big screen, the Marvel film passed.

Titanic

When Cameron released “Titanic” (1997), he had already accumulated some successes in his career, such as: “Alien: The Rescue” and “The Terminator” .

However, it was with Jack and Rose that the director moved the world with the tragedy based on a true story.

Not only did audiences respond well to the film, critics did too.

The feature was the great winner of the 1998 Oscar, taking the main prize of the night and ten more, becoming the biggest winner in the history of the award.

In his speech at the ceremony he said: “I am the king of the world”.

The production depicts the sinking of one of the largest ships in the world, accompanying some passengers, especially Jack and Rose, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet during the trip.

“Titanic” grossed $2.1 billion.

More than ten years later, in 2009, James Cameron returned to prominence in Hollywood.

This time, revolutionizing the way of making cinema. He was responsible for introducing new technology to the industry.

The whole scenario “Avatar” was created on the computer and featured extraordinary effects and visual quality.

It was the first film production to make extensive use of motion capture. The format was already used in video games, but it was after the feature film that the technology began to be disseminated in cinema.

The title was nominated for nine Oscar categories and won three statuettes.

The production introduces the public to an exuberant alien world called Pandora, where the Na’vi live, beings that seem to be primitive in the eyes of white humans, but highly evolved.

Avatars are biological bodies controlled by the human mind that move freely throughout the realm. Jake Sully, a paralyzed former Marine, walks again through a avatar and falls in love with a Na’vi. This passion drives Jake to fight for Pandora’s survival.

“Avatar” is responsible for the highest-grossing film in the history of cinema, grossing US$ 2.9 billion worldwide.
