James Cameron Says Avatar 2 Is “More Emotional” Than The First Film

In an interview with Jason Carroll of CNN, James Cameron talked about how “Avatar: The Way of Water,” the sequel to the 2009 Oscar-winning film, is different from the original.

“I think it’s very exciting. I think it’s more emotional than the first movie. I think it focuses more on the character and relationship dynamics compared to the previous one, but it definitely delivers on the show,” she stated.

The new feature, which is set to premiere in December this year, is inspired by the director’s fascination with marine life. “I love the oceans. I’m in love with the ocean before I’ve even met one. I learned to scuba dive in rural Canada,” he pointed out.

Actors had to adapt to acting underwater, and he said that after training, stars Kate Winslet and Sigourney Weaver were able to hold their breath for up to six or seven minutes.

“Avatar” is the highest-grossing film of all time, having grossed over $2.8 billion. Entertainment industry watchers are watching to see if Cameron’s sequel can draw people back to Pandora – and theaters – once again.

“We were very invested in this idea of a franchise or saga that unfolds over multiple films, and the film itself is very expensive to make. And while we can make a lot of money, we can be unprofitable and you’re not going to be doing something unprofitable for a long time,” Cameron said.

The first film is being re-released in theaters, and the director stressed that he is excited about it.

“There’s a whole generation that’s only been able to see it on streaming, or blue-ray, if people still do that, so it was an exciting prospect to bring people back to the movies. And now it is more timely than ever, because they have suffered a lot in the last two years”, he highlighted, referring to the impacts of the pandemic.
