Tokyo has “conveyed its concerns” to Moscow over Russia’s cruise missile tests in the Sea of Japan, Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi told a news conference on Friday.
Moscow is urged to “refrain from any action that could escalate tensions in Northeast Asia” in light of the situation, Hayashi said, reiterating that Japan “strongly condemns” Russia’s aggression against Ukraine as ” shakes the foundations of the international order. ”
Earlier in the day, Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kisi said Moscow was “aiming to demonstrate its strength in the Far East” and “modernize its naval force.”
Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Thursday that two submarines of the Pacific Fleet had successfully tested a Kalibr cruise missile from a submarine position in the waters of the Sea of Japan, according to a post on its official Facebook page.
The cruise missiles successfully hit a fake enemy, the ministry said, and that more than 15 fleet vessels participated in the exercise.
The test launches took place while the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group is conducting bilateral operations with the Japanese Naval Self-Defense Forces in the Sea of Japan.
The two countries have been at loggerheads since Russia invaded Ukraine. Russia withdrew from peace talks with Japan last month and froze joint economic projects related to the disputed Kuril Islands over sanctions imposed by Tokyo on the invasion.
