Japanese PM eats fish from Fukushima waters after sewage row to show it’s safe

THE prime minister of Japan Fumio Kishida and his ministers publicly ate sashimi from her fish Fukushima during lunch on Wednesday (8/30) to show that the waters are safe.

According to an Associated Press report, the effort by the Japanese prime minister and ministers to prove that the area’s fish are safe and show their confidence in the quality of water treatment comes after the government’s decision to dump water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean.

Kishida and his ministers ate sashimi of sole, octopus and sea bass, caught off the coast of Fukushima after the decision to dump the used and treated water into the ocean, along with vegetables, fruits and a bowl of rice from the area, Economy and Industry Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, who attended the meeting, told reporters.

The release of treated sewage into the oceanwhich began Thursday and is expected to continue for decades, has caused the strong reaction of fishing groups, but also of neighboring countries.

China immediately banned all imports of Japanese seafood as an answer. In South Korea, thousands of people participated in demonstrations over the weekend to condemn the government’s action.

It is noted, that all post-release seawater and fish sampling data were below established safety limits.

The waters from Fukushima Daiichi are the legacy of the triple disaster that hit Japan in March 2011, when a very strong 9.1 earthquake triggered a tsunami. The tsunami flooded the station and caused a meltdown in three of its reactors. The water in question will be released into the sea in small quantities and after additional checks, said TEPCO, the company that manages the facility.. On Wednesday morning (30/8) the first quantity, 7,800 cubic meters, was thrown into the sea, while the whole process will be completed in 17 days.
