Jean-Paul Belmondo: France bids farewell to its favorite “Bebel” – Tomorrow the actor’s funeral

France said goodbye today to “Ace of Aces”, her favorite “Bebel”, a charismatic actress and legend of Nouvelle Vague, who died on Monday at the age of 88 but will live forever on movie screens.

The hearses carried his coffin Jean-Paul Belmondo, covered with the French flag, in the courtyard of the military museum of the Apostates, where Napoleon is buried, for the official ceremony.

“Bebel” was for years one of the most popular actors in France, having starred in dozens of commercial films, having already become famous as a star of the Nouvelle Vague, mainly thanks to the film “Breathless” by Jean-Luc Godard, 1959.

«He was the friend everyone dreamed ofSaid the President of France Emanuel Macron at his funeral. “He never stopped renewing himself, recreating himself and in this way he conquered successive generations”, he continued, to conclude: “Goodbye, Bebel».

“Where he is, I’m sure he smiles, as always,” said his grandson, also an actor, Victor Belmondo, pointing to the large photo of his grandfather with a smile on his face. “He never stopped seeking happiness, but also giving it,” continued Victor, who was accompanied by the actor’s other grandchildren and his youngest daughter, Stella.

The ceremony was attended by members of his family, many ministers, artists such as Oscar winner Jean Desjardins, actors such as Guillaume Canet and Marion Cotillard and many fans of the actor. In total, in the courtyard of the mansion, in addition to relatives and officials, 1,000 people were allowed to enter, provided they were provided with a “green” toilet. However, the crowd could watch the ceremony from the giant screens that were placed around the monument, while many TV channels interrupted their program to broadcast it. In Belgium, the RTBF channel broadcast the ceremony live.

Tonight, the gates of the Veterans will open to say goodbye to Belmondo to those who wish. Such a popular pilgrimage was organized after the death of former President Jacques Chirac in 2019.

Belmondo will be buried tomorrow morning in the church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in central Paris, in a close family circle.
