Job cuts will continue into next year, says Amazon CEO

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said job cuts at the e-commerce giant would continue into early next year, in his first public comments since the company began widespread layoffs earlier this week.

“Our annual planning process extends into the new year, which means there will be more role reductions as leaders continue to make adjustments,” Jassy wrote in a letter to staff Thursday. “These decisions will be shared with affected employees and organizations in early 2023.”

The CEO said that the company “has not yet concluded exactly how many other functions will be impacted” by the layoffs, but added that “each leader will communicate with their respective teams when we have the details agreed”.

Amazon confirmed on Wednesday that layoffs had begun at the company, just days after several outlets reported that the e-commerce giant planned to cut around 10,000 employees this week.

The e-commerce giant and other tech companies have significantly increased hiring over the past two years as the pandemic has shifted consumer habits towards e-commerce. Now, many of these seemingly untouchable companies are going through a crisis and laying off thousands of workers, as people revert to pre-pandemic ways and macroeconomic conditions deteriorate.

Meta, Facebook’s parent company, recently announced 11,000 job cuts, the biggest in the company’s history. Twitter also announced widespread job cuts after Elon Musk bought the company for $44 billion.

Jassy alluded to the macroeconomic climate in her memo on Thursday, saying this year’s annual operational review “is more difficult because the economy remains in a challenging place and we’ve hired quickly in recent years.”

The CEO also highlighted that this is the most difficult decision the company has had to make during his one-and-a-half-year term at the helm of Amazon.

“It has not gone unnoticed by me or any of the leaders making these decisions that it is not just employees we are eliminating, but people with emotions, ambitions and responsibilities whose lives will be impacted,” wrote Jassy.
