China, with its decision to suspend bilateral climate talks with the US, is not punishing Washington but the world, US special envoy for climate change John Kerry said on Friday.
“No country should block progress on existential transnational issues because of bilateral differences,” said the former US secretary of state, who is now the Biden administration’s top climate diplomat. “Suspending cooperation does not punish the United States. It punishes the world, especially the developing world,” he argued.
Beijing announced on Friday that it is suspending dialogue with Washington in several areas, reacting to the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.
Among other things, the talks on combating climate change, dialogue between military officials from the two countries, cooperation to tackle cross-border crime and drug smuggling are suspended.
Washington called such moves “irresponsible”.
