Johnson: ‘We will not leave Hong Kong’

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson vowed today that he “will not leave” Hong Kong, in a statement issued on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the former British colony’s return to China.

“We will not leave Hong Kong,” he said in a video message on Twitter. “25 years ago we made a promise to the region and its people and we intend to keep it, to do everything we can to ensure that China lives up to its commitments so that Hong Kong is once again ruled by the people of Hong Kong, for the people of Hong Kong,” he added.

Johnson assessed that “at some point since then” Beijing has stopped meeting its obligations, a situation that “threatens the rights and freedoms” of Hong Kong residents as well as the progress and prosperity of the region.

Following the crackdown on pro-democracy protests in 2019, London says it has received more than 120,000 residence applications from Hong Kong residents who also hold a British passport.

In her own statement, Secretary of State Liz Truss decried “the continued erosion of civil and civil liberties,” particularly after the National Security Law came into effect on June 30, 2020. “(China’s) authorities have stifled the opposition, criminalized the dissidents and expelled all those who could speak the truth to the regime,” he added.
