The armed forces of Russia and Belarus announced today that they are conducting joint air transport exercises in western Belarus, near the Polish border, which is at the center of an immigration crisis.
In a statement, the Belarusian Ministry of Defense states that a “regular” unit of paratroopers of the two countries is training in an area of the Grodno region. The Belarusian ministry added that Russian IL-76 transport aircraft and helicopters of the Belarusian forces are participating in these exercises.
“After the shootings, the Russian and Belarusian paratroopers are conducting a series of combat exercises, which mainly include occupying and defending a position, searching for and destroying targets,” the Minsk statement said.
For their part, the Russian armed forces, cited by Interfax, said it was a “sudden inspection” of troop training.
The Russian news agency TASS quoted the Belarusian Defense Minister as saying that Belarus was ready to ensure its security and call on Russia for help if needed.
