The debut of “Joker: Delirium for Two” grossed less than expected in the first weekend, and Warner Bros. Discovery agrees.
“The film didn’t get the audience reception we expected,” said Jeff Goldstein, president of U.S. domestic distribution at Warner Bros., in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.
According to him, the second film showed “a deeper dive into the mental illness” of the main character played by Joaquin Phoenix, while part of the villain’s target audience did not connect with Lady Gaga’s character.
The sequel grossed US$121 million (about R$660 million) globally, according to Deadline, in its first weekend of release. The number is lower than the US$139 million (R$759.2 million) accumulated by the first film, released in 2019.
What makes the sequel’s situation even worse is its domestic collection, in the United States. The production grossed just US$40 million (R$218.4 million) in the country, a figure lower than “The Marvels” and “The Flash”, both considered commercial failures, which grossed US$46.1 million (R$251 .7 million) and US$70 million (R$382.3 million), respectively.
According to the first projections, “Joker: Delirium for Two” was expected to gross US$70 million (R$382.3 million). However, a few days before the premiere, expectations dropped to US$50 million (R$273 million).
