Jovanotti, daughter Teresa and cancer: “I thought I was the strong one, but my legs gave out”

Jovanotti, a surprise guest of the European Institute of Oncology for the annual meeting “Ieo for women”, at the Manzoni theater in Milan told, like some patients, the own experience with cancer. The one that involved him as a father. In July 2020 his daughter Teresa, obtained from wife Francesca Valiani, he discovers he has a lymph node that hurts. After an initial examination, the suggestion to make further investigations to which the 22-year-old undergoes the Ieo. Thus we arrive at the diagnosis: it is Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

From that moment «an adventure began which lasted for last summer six difficult months that ended well. Now the disease has disappeared and Teresa has resumed her school“. Only today that the daughter is fine, the singer-songwriter begins to realize “in a more rational way of everything that happened, of the encounters I made, of the discoveries I made with respect to people close to me, to my two girls , my wife and Teresa, who faced this journey with a strength that surprised me. I thought I was the strong one of the group and instead I was the one who had the legs that gave way».

Hard months that were a life lesson for him: “What I learned from a father, is that these things are faced, today with much more advanced, evolved, complex tools, one day at a time, with a goal ahead, thinking about the future, but with courage, with hope and with confidence. These are the fundamental words. But I would add one, perhaps a little more abstract but necessary, with love“. From this point of view, the Covid she helped her family “because it made our isolation easier. For example, I managed to keep all relatives at bay. Because all the relatives projected their concern onto Teresa».

Jovanotti then wanted to launch a message to the women in the room: “I know what you are going through, that this is an adventure for which the goal is to come out stronger, from the interior point of view and also from the physical point of view. Of course, we are more vulnerable. But vulnerability does not make us weak, it makes us more human, more aware and therefore also stronger ». In the end the singer-songwriter gave that special audience two songs, accompanying himself on the guitar, and receiving enthusiastic applause.
